2011 It’s Only a Window, I’ll Be Your Mirror
A Triptych with Maarten Van Nieuwenhove & Laura Bergans
The spatial conception of the painting is unique in Memling’s diptych of Maarten Van Nieuwenhove, 1487. The frames of the panels seem to have been conceived as the two front windows of a small rectangular room, which is visible in the convex mirror behind the Virgin.
In this video-installation I searched for a flemish boy who’s called Maarten Van Nieuwenhove & who was approx the same age of the Maarten Van Nieuwenhove portraited in Memlings painting. Maarten Van Nieuwenhove & Laura Bergans were projected onto the windows of the Kortrijkse Schouwburg. The spatial conception was revealed through editing this time, posing the questions: Are both subjects again to be found in the same room? Can this room be found behind the windows of the Schouwburg? Is the outdoor landscape another window or does it show what both subjects see upon looking outside. And what is really going on in this frame of time?
